Chapter Review: Question #9
The five steps to media literacy are description, analysis, interpretation, evaluation, and engagement. While all five play a significant role in the process, the most difficult of the steps must be evaluation. The added difficulty of this particular step is aided by its placement in the process. After carrying out the first three practices, evaluation serves to draw the most well-rounded, well-constructed conclusions that one can in attempting media literacy and apply it as necessary. It's the step that takes inventory of the information that has been provided, different attributes, characteristics, and overall legitimacy of that information, and general insight one may be able to conjure themselves. The completion of this step is pivotal in progressing to "engagement" because it allows the analyst to put forth an educated, well-calibrated claim that holds merit in attempting to improve journalistic practice and integrity.
